Norwegian Tone Kummervold specialises in the dramatic mezzo-soprano repertoire which suits her deep, dark voice absolutely perfectly. Her “warm and unique sound” (Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz), coupled with outstanding acting skills and linguistic ability, make her one of the most interesting and desirable mezzo-sopranos to emerge on the international opera scene.
Tone began her studies at The University of Stavanger in Norway and went on to complete her education at the Conservatorio L. Refice in Italy, where she studied with such renowned artists as Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz, Agata Bienkowska and Elena Obraztsova. She graduated with honours in 2011 and received a scholarship from The University of Stavanger as the best student in her class.
While completing her masters degree, Tone made her debut at the Norwegian National Opera as the 3rd Dryad in Rusalka (2009), and as Olga in Eugene Onegin (2010). She was part of the opera studio from 2011 to 2012 and became a permanent member of the Norwegian National Opera’s soloist ensemble in the 2012/2013 season, where she continues to perform leading roles to this day.
In 2015, she received the prestigious Music award from Adresseavisen, one of the biggest newspapers in Norway and has received scholarships from the Tom Wilhelmsen fund and from the Supporters of the Norwegian National Opera.
A gifted linguist, she is able to perform roles in Italian, Russian, German, Czech, French, English and Norwegian language.
In 2016, Tone debuted in Verdi’s Requiem with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and she sang the Brahms Alt Rhapsody with the Kristiansand Symphonic Orchestra in 2018. She has also performed concerts with the Odense Symphonic Orchestra and Sønderborg Symphonic Orchestra in Denmark.
Tone made her debut in Paris in 2021, performing Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Philharmonique de Radio France, and was invited to perform at Glyndebourne Opera.
In 2022 she debuted at the Prague State Opera as La Morte in Flammen by Erwin Schulhoff, and has since sung extensively across the Nordics, including as Ulrica in Un Ballo in Macschera and Angela in the world premiere of Missy Mazzoli's The Listeners, to great critical acclaim. Future engagements include Oedipe at Bregenzer Festpiele.
